State Oversight
Regulated electric utilities, such as Duke Energy, TVA, Southern Company, AEP, California Edison, etc., have their rates set by state regulators (rate commissions or public utility commissions). Note that the rates and policies of municipal utilities (“munis”) and electric co-operatives (“co-ops”) are not state-regulated in the same manner.
Federal Oversight
Power transmission systems, which are owned by individual utilities but linked together to form the national grid, are regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Nuclear Oversight
Nuclear power generating plants are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and overseen by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).
